Police warn schools about recent break-ins

Police have issued a warning to school managements in Labasa, advising them to avoid keeping large sums of money on school premises.

This caution comes in response to a recent increase in break-ins targeting both primary and secondary schools in the area.

Authorities are urging schools to implement stricter security measures to prevent further incidents.

Divisional Police Commander (DPC) Northern Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka has reported a rise in break-ins at schools this month.

The incidents have occurred in canteens, classrooms, and various offices within the schools. The police are urging schools to take preventive measures to safeguard their facilities and assets.

Incident reports

He reported that the first incident occurred between August 5 and 6, when someone allegedly forced open the main door of a secondary school in Labasa Town, entered the canteen, and stole cash and assorted goods.

The second alleged incident involved a primary school outside Labasa Town, where between August 8 and 9, an intruder forcefully entered the main office and stole cash.

The third case, which was similar in nature, happened between August 9 and 11 at a prominent college in Labasa. In this incident, someone forced open the principal’s office door and stole cash.

Another alleged incident took place between August 14 and 15 at a primary and secondary school located on the same property. During this event, an intruder stole cash, assorted items, and snacks.

In the most recent incident, between August 16 and 17, someone allegedly entered a primary school in Labasa Town and stole assorted snacks, items, and cash.

School holidays

As teachers, students, and parents prepare for the school holidays, SSP Baledrokadroka emphasised the importance of securing school properties properly.

“Teachers and school management need to work together to ensure that a watchman is present at all times,” SSP Baledrokadroka said.

“Security measures must be in place at all times.”
