Suva City Council (SCC) skilled-based employees now have the chance to upgrade and attain skilled-based certificates following the recent signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pacific Polytech (PP).

SCC acting chief executive officer Tevita Boseiwaqa said the MoU will allow staff members enhance their qualifications.

“Majority of our staff do skill-based work and require this, basically more than 200 staff members are going to be involved,” Mr Boseiwaqa said.

“What we have here is that it will cover three-quarters of the staff, I see that since our approach is multi-level and multi-skills – this MoU can go a long way.”

Mr Boseiwaqa said that SCC will now conduct its training needs analysis to identify specific areas for staff to make use of the MoU.

He said the analysis will further allow them see areas where they need staff, with the ultimate ambition of exposing them to other skills.

“When they are multi-skilled, they are in a better platform, their platform for growth is stronger rather than been specialised in one area,” he said.

PP founding director Peni Taoi welcomed the agreement as the nearly signed MoU is now an addition to their Labasa and Nasinu Town Council’s MoU offering similar benefits to employees.

“Pacific Polytech is more on the technical areas, we also provide upskilling because of the opportunities that arise within,” Mr Taoi said.

“This will be my third MoU for the council, one in Labasa, one in Nasinu and now with SCC.”
