The Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts says it is considering the resumption of competitive sporting competitions for the 2022 school year.

These include sporting activities like the annual Deans Rugby Competition, inter-house, zone competitions and other sporting activities.

Education Minister Premila Kumar made this revelation at a talanoa session with students of Levuka Public School yesterday.

“We are considering resuming these competitive sports, as we open up we want schools to normalise and students should be able to do what they used to do before,” Ms Kumar said.

“There’s no reason why we shouldn’t have that, but we are still going through COVID and absolutely will be able to begin with these activities as restrictions are lifted,” she said.

She also said she would be talking to sporting bodies soon on how this could be started.

She added that the onus was on students to get vaccinated so that there was safe space when these activities resumed.

“As soon as you get vaccinated, the number of cases comes down, you will have sports and we will have these activities for 2022,” she said.
