Ashneel Prasad, 30, started fishing when he was in Year Three and also helped his father with chores around their farm.
The father-of-one didn’t regret leaving school at a young age because he believes that it was his calling to fish and farm.
“I was not really a smart child when it came to education so I quit going to school in Year Three. I started helping my dad around the house,” Mr Prasad said.

Mr Prasad is one of the recipients of the Northern Development Programme (NDP) grant.
“I received the NDP grant in 2014 and I bought a boat and an engine which has really helped me financially. Before I used to hire a boat to go fishing but now I am able to save money,” Mr Prasad said.
“With the money I get from fishing I was able to extend my house and bought a solar panel for my home. I am thankful to the Government for its assistance through the NDP grant.
“I hope to extend the front potion of my house soon and that too from the cash I get from fishing. The main challenge I face as a farmer is that of the weather and ice for the fish when out at sea.”
He urges students to study hard because the Government is helping them with school fees and bus fares.
