Back to Ba carnival contestant Avantika Anjali Prasad said she will be advocating against gender inequality. She will be doing this in the days leading up to the carnival’s crowning ceremony on Saturday.

The carnival is the first to be held in Ba following the COVID-19 pandemic and is an initiative by the Ba Vision Centre with Shop N Save Supermarket and Apso Coatings being the official sponsors.

The event is being held at the Ba Market grounds and was opened on August 13 with the crowning set to take place this Saturday.

“I’ll be advocating against gender inequality because I have witnessed it and also in the carnival, there is no king at the moment,” she said.

The 18-year-old confirmed she was entering as an independent contestant with no sponsorship and that she is one of the six contestants vying for the crown.

“I got to know about the carnival because my friend just called and she asked me if I wanted to be a queen contestant in the carnival so I said yes. I want to make my parents feel proud and I wanted to get the experience of being a queen.”

The first-year University of the South Pacific student said she is studying a Bachelor of Arts in Information Systems and Economics at the Lautoka campus.

She resides at Vunisamaloa, Ba with her parents and two younger brothers who have been supportive of her as a contestant.
