There are plans underway to remove exams for students in Years 1 to 3 because the Ministry of Education, Heritage and Arts is looking towards strengthening the knowledge, numeracy and literacy skills of young children.

This confirmation was delivered during Minister Premila Kumar’s formal visit to Lekutu Secondary School on Thursday.

Ms Kumar said plans were in place to remove exams to give way to basic reading, writing and mathematical skills growth in the early stages of a child’s life.

New Civics and Moral Education Curriculum

Ms Kumar indicated a new Civics and Moral Education curriculum would be introduced into the education system from Years 1-13.

These subjects would undergo a trial period after which the ministry intends to introduce these subjects during the first term of new school year in April.

“Students in Year 1 to Year 3 will have a dedicated curriculum for this while students from Year 4 till Year 11 will have a session each per week for 30 minutes,” she said.

Year 12 and 13 students would use the same curriculum, but it would be called as lifeskills.

Ms Kumar said the new curriculum would see students enhancing their understanding on community values, different cultures and other aspects of life at a young age.

She mentioned that students would also be taught on social media etiquettes and other cultural aspects that would in return promote to the greater good of our society.

“These are some of the major changes that are coming and we need everyone’s support,” Ms Kumar added.
