President champions rugby’s role in diplomacy

Sports diplomacy took centre stage during a meeting between the President, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, and World Rugby vice chairperson Jonathan Webb in Dublin, Ireland yesterday.
He shared about how sports could strengthen international relationships and promote shared values like teamwork, discipline, and respect.
Ratu Naiqama congratulated Mr Webb on his recent appointment and praised World Rugby’s efforts to grow the game globally.

He acknowledged the sport’s unifying role in the Pacific and its ability to inspire youth, especially through the achievements of Fiji’s men’s and women’s teams in both 7s and 15s formats.
“Discussions also touched on the recent performances of Fiji’s men’s and women’s rugby teams in both the 7s and 15s formats, which continue to inspire young athletes across the Pacific region,” a Government statement read.
The President also highlighted the growing popularity of kaji (junior) rugby and secondary school competitions in Fiji, which are becoming key pathways for young players to reach the international stage.
He said that many Fijian athletes have secured professional contracts overseas, allowing them to support their families and contribute to their communities.
Mr Webb, in turn, commended Fiji’s contribution to global rugby, praising the country’s natural talent and deep passion for the sport.
He reaffirmed World Rugby’s commitment to working closely with the Fiji Rugby Union to strengthen development pathways and create more opportunities for young Pacific players.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to deepen collaboration and ensure rugby continues to be a force for unity, opportunity, and international goodwill.
“He (Mr Webb) acknowledged the significant role Fijian players have played in enhancing the global standard of rugby and reaffirmed World Rugby’s commitment to continuing its partnership with the Fiji Rugby Union to strengthen development pathways and opportunities for young players,” the statement read.
