Prime Minister Delivers Promise To Anitioki Villagers, Commissions New Access Road

Struggling to get to the main town and city because of accessibility issues will be a worry of the past for villagers of Anitioki, Daku in Tailevu.

This was after the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama commissioned the first access road into the village yesterday afternoon.

Mr Bainimarama had finally delivered a promise he made in 2017 to the villagers.

For years, the villagers of Anitioki would travel by small punts or fiber boat to be able to send their children to school, sell their produce in the market and access health services at the Wainibokasi Hospital.

Salavou Suguturaga, 63, said it had been the need of their forefathers to have a road accessing the village, but their request seemed to have fallen on deaf ears.

“We are very grateful that finally we have a road to access the village,” Ms Suguturaga said.

“Before when it rains heavily, our children would not be able to attend school because we prioritised their safety because they would be travelling by boat,” she said.

“The women would have issues taking their produce to sell in the Nausori or Suva markets.”

She acknowledged the Government for not forgetting them and being able to fulfil its promise.

While opening the new road Mr Bainimarama said the Government would not stop until they build better livelihoods for all Fijians.

The 1.8km road including the bridge costed the Government $3.5 million.

“Roadway by roadway, bridge by bridge, we are connecting Fijians through a reliable, nationally -connected transportation network,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“Today, that journey has come to Anitioki and we are proud to deliver this new road and the new opportunities it will bring for each of you and your families.

“Farmers can easily access the market in Nausori Town quickly enough that their seafood stays fresh. You can travel more easily to reach essential services, like healthcare and education.”
