A school principal has made a submission for the Government to provide food assistance for students, especially those from struggling families.

This was during a public consultation on the Education Act 1966 review held on Tuesday.

Basden College principal, Waisale Tavatuilagi, raised the key concern about student welfare.

He asked why food support could not be provided if the Government already offers e-Transport card assistance.

“If the Government can help with bus fare, why not help with food as well?” he asked.

Mr Tavatuilagi explained that some students in some schools come from very poor backgrounds, including those living in HART homes and squatter settlements.

Many have moved from rural areas to the city and now live with relatives, often feeling left out or forgotten. He believes this affected their ability to learn and stay in school.

Another issue raised during the consultation was the strict rules around student enrolment, especially concerning the required exam marks.
