Communications skills and critical thinking are two combining elements that are necessary in every workplace.
It is therefore important to enhance such skills set by acquiring training and qualifications through language and literature programme.
At the Fiji National University, its Language and Literature programme aims to provide students the opportunity to develop advanced critical reading and thinking skills.

Offered by the College of Humanities and Education (CHE), where a diverse range of programmes for careers such as Teaching, Childcare, Music, Film and Television, Fitness Adviser, Graphic Design, Public Relations, Library Services, English Language Specialist and Social Policy adviser, to name a few.
The study on Language, focuses on the varieties of languages, second language acquisition, approach to language and literary studies.
Such studies include prose, poetry, classical and contemporary drama in English and Hindi/ iTaukei /Urdu languages.
The programme offers a major in English and a minor in the local vernacular languages.
This is a coherent and comprehensive programme of literary studies and provides a broad liberal arts background.
The vernacular courses can be substituted with minors from other disciplines such as Social Science, Commerce, Media and Journalism, Science, Agriculture or Engineering.
Studying Literature brings out the creative side of students in the area of arts and humanity.
Students of language and literature, develop a variety of important critical thinking skills which are applicable to everthing we do personally and professionally.
Literature looks at the study of words and language and how it relates to the society we live in and the practices we make.
Current Bachelor of Arts (Language and Literature) course requires a pass in the Fiji Seventh Form Examination or equivalent with a total of 200 or more marks.
This includes a 50 percent pass in English, plus best three.
Applicants may also be admitted to the programme who may not meet the requirement but with years of continuous education progression.
These applicants are able to demonstrate their ability to succeed in the programme at these levels on the basis of their maturity, work experience or prior learning and are 21 years of age
