As a parent, it was proud moment for Joe Qalo as he watched his only daughter Margaret graduate from Jai Narayan College in Suva on Wednesday.

Margaret was among the 130 Year 13 students who graduated at Jai Narayan College in Suva. Mr Qalo said he was not only proud, but also relieved as all his children had now completed their secondary school education.

“She is my only daughter and I have three boys,” he said.

“My wife and I reminded her that she was the only girl in the house and she had to prove herself.

“She wanted to become a veterinarian, but I said the time is hard and she had to consider us, her parents who are retired.

“I told her to get every opportunity that she got, but make sure to get a degree for better pay.”

Mr Qalo said Margaret studied according to her preferences and he never pressured her to study late at night.

“She preferred getting the copy of the worksheet rather than studying on viber,” he said. “She studied, answered the questions well and we delivered it to the school because she said using viber distracted her.

“We gave her time and supported her in delivering the worksheet.

“We avoided late night studies, we told her to just study during the day since it was more effective for her because school was closed.” Edited by Jonathan Bryce
