Speaker of Parliament Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu ruled that Opposition MP Parveen Bala provide the evidence of allegations he made on Monday claiming that the Minister for Finance Biman Prasad had promised an increase payment of sugarcane to $110 per tonne.

In making his ruling, Ratu Naiqama said Mr Bala should provide the evidence of where Deputy Prime Minister Biman Prasad said it, and when it was said.

In Parliament on Monday, Mr Bala said: “This budget does nothing for the sugarcane farmers who in the sugarcane belts are asking what happened to the promise of $110 per tonne cane payment by the Minister of Finance.”

Ratu Naiqama told Mr Bala that if he was unable to provide evidence then he had to withdraw the statement he made before Thursday.
