The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has launched an urgent investigation after garbage bags were found floating near Qamea Island, prompting public concern and questions over possible illegal dumping.
The incident came to light on 13 November after social media footage showed waste drifting close to the island. The Ministry says it is working closely with authorities and hoteliers in Taveuni and Qamea to identify the source.
From COP30 in Belém, Brazil, Minister for Environment and Climate Change Mosese Bulitavu condemned the act, calling it irresponsible and dangerous.
He said the reckless disposal of waste threatens communities and Fiji’s fragile marine ecosystems, and warned that those responsible will be held accountable.
A joint inspection is scheduled for this weekend and early next week across Taveuni and Qamea. Officials will meet with community members who retrieved the rubbish to assist with the inquiry.
The Ministry has reminded all facilities that strict waste management requirements under the Environment Management Act 2005 remain in force.
The Ministry says it is committed to uncovering the facts and will take action once investigations are complete. Further updates will be released as soon as findings are confirmed.
