The generator section of Goundar Shipping’s Lomaiviti Princess VIII caught fire yesterday afternoon, the National Fire Authority (NFA) has confirmed.
The NFA received the emergency call at approximately 4.39pm, with the first fire appliance arriving at 4.42pm, followed by support crews. The fire was fully extinguished by 4.55pm.
NFA chief executive officer Mr Puamau Sowane said the incident was a serious reminder of the dangers posed by fires on vessels and how quickly they can escalate if not contained.

“A fire on a boat or shipping vessel can place lives at extreme risk, particularly when it occurs in confined spaces such as an engine room or generator compartment,” Mr Sowane said.
“There is often limited escape access, the presence of fuel and electrical systems, and the added challenge of being surrounded by water.
“If not contained quickly, the consequences can be severe, including major property loss, injuries, or fatalities.
“We commend our firefighters for their swift and professional response, but this incident must also serve as a wake-up call for all vessel owners and operators to always take fire safety seriously.”
Mr Sowane urged all vessel owners and operators to ensure proper fire prevention measures are in place and that emergency readiness is prioritised.
