Rabuku Appointed as New Acting DPP

Suva-based lawyer John Rabuku has been appointed as the new acting Director of Public Prosecution.
Mr Rabuku confirmed this last night.
He replaces the late and former acting DPP, David Toganivalu.

“It’s sad that it came at a time like this, but somebody must go in and do the job,” Mr Rabuku said.
“My appointment as the acting DPP was unexpected, but because of the passing of David, I think Government decided it’s time to bring in someone who already knows the work and would help carry on from there.”
Mr Rabuku had earlier applied for the position and was interviewed for the position last Thursday.
“I had applied for the deputy DPP, but because of the passing of the DPP, I told them to hold it off and see what Government says.”
Mr Rabuku runs his own private law firm, John Rabuku Lawyers.
“Today (yesterday) was my first day in office. I merely greeted the staff and everyone in the office. It will take three weeks to sort my small practice and pass on the work to my solicitor partner, Cati Loqi Tawaivuna.”

- Graduated in 1997 from USP Law School
- Completed Professionals and joined DPP as Legal Officer in 1998
- Ran the Labasa Office from 1999 to 2004
- Joined Young & Associates in Lautoka until 2006
- Appointed as Magistrate in 2006
- Sat on the bench in Lautoka and Ba until 2009
- Appointed Acting DPP in 2009 until December 31st
- Returned to private practice from 2010 to 2013
- Left Fiji to set up the Nauru Legal Aid Office in January 2014- Director Public Defender
- Appointed Senior Government counsel for Nauru in 2016
- Became DPP Nauru in 2017
- Returned to Fiji in 2019
- Rejoined Law Solutions as Consultant Solicitor.
- Set up own law firm in April 2021 largely focusing on criminal and family matters.
