Shivneil Kumar Raj, an Accounting lecturer at the University of Fiji, graduated with a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Law from the University of Fiji’s Saweni, Lautoka campus.

The 30-year-old was also awarded a gold medal for being the most outstanding student in Public Law.

Mr Raj attributes his five degrees to his love of learning new things and not letting negativity hinder his pursuit of further education.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Economics in 2015, a Post Graduate Diploma in Accounting in 2016, a Post Graduate Diploma in Economics in 2018, a Master of Commerce in Accounting in 2021, and the Post Graduate Diploma in Public Law in 2023. He is also set to graduate with a Post Graduate Certificate in International Relations in December 2023.

Mr Raj has always had an interest in law, and he noted that the Public Law course he completed was designed for those in public service.

“It equips them with the knowledge of the law and how to better serve the people because we are public servants. So, it’s very important for us to understand that this course provides that particular service efficiently,” he said.

“Even if you don’t have a law degree, you can still do this course especially if you work as a public administrator or in the court administration system.”

Juggling work and school was a significant challenge for him, even though he completed the programme part-time, he took a full load to finish the course.

He acknowledges that time management was the biggest challenge he faced in balancing work and his personal life.

Mr Raj plans to pursue a PhD in Accounting in the next semester, and he attributes his success to his parents, Mohini Lata and Vijendra Kumar.
