A long-awaited mortuary for the people of Ra is finally on track, with the Government confirming that a much bigger facility is expected to be completed by February 2026.
The announcement brings new hope to families who have endured years of emotional and financial strain due to the limited spaces at the current Rakiraki hospital mortuary.
The works timeline was confirmed by the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Atonio Lalabalavu while responding to Opposition MP Virendra Lal in Parliament this week.

The mortuary, valued at $250,000, will feature 18 berths, modern refrigeration, proper drainage and sanitation systems, and a dedicated family viewing room.
Mr Lalabalavu said the project’s Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry and the Ra Chamber of Commerce is now with the Solicitor-General for final review.
“The ground-breaking of this mortuary is more than construction, it is dignity restored for our people,” he said.
He added that the new facility would directly end the burden of families travelling long distances while grieving the loss of loved ones.
Mr Lalabalavu further stated that these inclusions were designed to give families “a respectful, private space during their most difficult moments.”
A highlight of the project is its strong public–private partnership.
The Ra Chamber of Commerce, supported by local businesses, the Ra diaspora, and community fundraising, will fully fund and maintain the facility for 15 years after it opens.
“This project shows what can happen when communities and government work hand in hand. It reflects the heart of Ra, people coming together for their own progress.”
The Ministry will provide morgue attendants, pay utilities and handle all construction approvals.
Health officials are also overseeing technical standards to ensure the facility is disaster-ready and capable of supporting emergency response operations.
Reassuring Parliament, the Mr Lalabalavu said: “We remain committed to the people of Ra. This mortuary reflects our values of dignity, respect and compassion.”
