Labasa Town Council has recorded arrears of $2.4 million as of yesterday.

This was revealed by the council special administrator, Doreen Robinson.

She is encouraging ratepayers in Labasa to make an effort to pay their arrears.

“There are about 1200 ratepayers and many haven’t paid rates since the COVID-19 pandemic,” Ms Robinson said.

“We have incentives for those who pay their rates on time and yet many do not make use it.”

She said despite the arrears, the council continued to provide services to its ratepayers.

“We don’t have deadlines for ratepayers, we rely on their good will and honesty since it is the duty of ratepayers to pay their rates,” she said.

“If they can’t pay the full amount, we advise them to make arrangement with the council.”

Meanwhile, Labasa Ratepayers Association president Paul Jaduram is advising ratepayers to do their part.

“It is unfair on those who are paying rates on time compared to others who haven’t paid a single cent and benefiting from the regular services provided by the council,” Mr Jaduram said.

“The council needs revenue to improve services and meet the demand of its customers which can only be done if ratepayers pay their rates.”
