Ratu Naiqama Speech: Free Chiefs Involved In 2000 Coup
Ratu Naiqama said the prerogative of mercy rests with the President who appoints the Mercy Commission which is chaired by the Attorney-General and four other members appointed by the President.

Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu used his first speech as leader of Opposition requesting the release of chiefs such as Ratu Inoke Takiveikata who were jailed for their involvement in the 2000 coup.
In his speech, Ratu Naiqama said he shared the sentiments expressed by his predecessor Sitiveni Rabuka.
He said that despite the adversity and hardship faced, the President Major General (ret’d) Jioji Konrote’s message would always give Fijians hope and provide assurance for a sense of unity, prerogative mercy and common purpose for all citizens.

“The President has the power to grant free of conditional pardon to a person convicted of an offense and remitting all or part of a punishment,” he said.
He requested that the President consider those who have served their time and have a good track record and qualify to be released on parole.
