The opening of the refurbished Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) building at Nasova in Suva has reignited an age-old debate around the significance of traditional and historical institutions in Fiji.
Unity Fiji Party leader Savenaca Narube weighed in and said that the GCC must remain independent from the Government.
“I urged everyone, especially the indigenous people, to keep an open mind about the GCC,” Mr Narube said.

“The chiefs play an important role in society. At the same time, the GCC must be independent and not be used as political pawns by the Government.
“In terms of priorities, I would have to put health above the GCC building. I am sure the chiefs would like to show their subjects that they are able to meet in more humble surroundings.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka on Wednesday reposted Fisheries Minister Alitia Bainivalu’s rebuttal of Member of Parliament (MP) Ketan Lal’s critical comments on the GCC, which generated hundreds of comments from both indigenous Fijians and indo-Fijians largely condemning Mr Lal.

Among them was MP, Lynda Tabuya, who said that Mr Lal should “stop his usual claim of being kai Savusavu” to score cheap political points.
She said his remarks were “disappointing”.
“Enough, Ketan Lal. Decide whether you embrace your roots or not,” Ms Tabuya said.
“Everything has a place and he should focus more on educating himself on the iTaukei ways rather than spewing negativity if he truly wants to represent the youth, 70 per cent of whom are iTaukei.”
