“The problem of this house was the sewage. There is a problem with a sewage line in front of the house and a filthy smell comes out of it,” said one resident.

Residents of Vomo St in Waiyavi, Lautoka, have called on authorities to deal with the unlawful drinking and partying at two vacant government quarters.

The houses are in an area where most government quarters are located and the lawns have been overtaken by weeds and bushes.

What is compounding the problem, the empty quarters are beside the main road where unreported instances of pedestrians and joggers are allegedly being hassled.

This happens in the evenings because the streetlights located near the quarters are not working.

Residents claim the quarters were used by young boys for drinking and committing other mischievous deeds.

She claim there was a break-in at the neighbours during Christmas.

Another resident said there were no streetlights in front of those houses.

“Few people have been robbed in front of that house at night. The government authorities should do something for all the vacant houses,” the resident claimed.

Government quarters associate coordinator, Praveen Goundar of the Ministry of Civil Service, said they plan to demolish all the vacant quarters because it was affected by termites.
