FRUSTRATED residents in Ba have criticized the Government for failing to provide timely updates on the ongoing termite outbreak, which continues to damage homes, crops, and community infrastructure across the Western Division.

During a town hall meeting on Thursday night, several residents expressed concern over the lack of information on termite control efforts.

“It has been almost two years now, and there are no updates,” one resident said.

Minister for Public Works and Infrastructure Ro Filipe Tuisawau said a Cabinet-appointed committee, chaired by Ministers Sashi Kiran and Sakiusa Tubuna, is working closely with the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) to contain the spread.

“Because of the urgency of the situation, Cabinet appointed Sashi Kiran and Sakiusa Tubuna to head a committee,” Ro Filipe said. “They have been working with biosecurity, with budget support, to address the problem.”

He added that the committee has inspected affected areas, identified infestation zones, and implemented both treatment and preventive measures.

“They have visited the infected areas and taken necessary action, including preventive measures, to contain and deal with the situation,” he said.

The termite outbreak, first detected more than a decade ago, remains a serious concern for authorities.

Residents in Ba, Tavua, and nearby districts continue to call for stronger biosecurity controls, increased public awareness, and consistent Government communication to prevent further spread across Fiji.
