Retired civil servants in the Northern Division have formed a recreational group which was launched by Gurbachan Swimming Pool manager, Kritesh Prasad, this week.

Named the Golden Age Survivors, the group was founded by 72-year-old Amelia Virivirilau.

“This is a good start because we need each other and your support to be successful. It will probably take months or even years to become a more effective and productive group,” she said.

The retired immigration officer said the group’s main focus would be on enjoyment, establishing and maintaining friendships and stimulation.

“This is a kind of recreation experience where members get out of their comfort zone and reach out to others with love,” she said.

The members have been allocated four hours every Wednesday to use the pool facilities and morning tea will be provided free.

Membership identification cards will be issued to those 60 years old and above.

Mr Prasad said it would be part of the town’s social responsibility where group members can enjoy and relax their mind and socialise with other retirees within the Northern Division.

The group’s vice president, Sisa Tuicoro, a retired military officer, who had served in Lebanon, is excited about the group because it would bring together retired civil servants to share ideas and learn from each other.

“But most importantly to keep elderly citizens active from boredom,” Mr Tuicoro said.

There are 65 registered members from different backgrounds.
