Members of the Namosi Ex-Scholars Association (NESA) commemorated their school’s reunion and the launching of next year’s golden jubilee celebration last Saturday.

The reunion was a tribute to Namosi Secondary School (NSS) which has left a significant mark on the lives of its alumni.

The occasion celebrated the journey of the school and its enduring commitment to education.

The event started with a church service, a testament to the strong bonds formed during the scholars’ years at the school, before transitioning into the official launch of the school’s golden jubilee.

A pioneer of the school, Veronika Tabua couldn’t hold back her emotions as she shared the trials and tribulations they went through.

She said education instilled respect in the younger generation.

Comparing their era to the present, she vividly described the challenges they went through when there were no roads, electricity, or internet. Especially, walking several kilometres daily to reach the nearest road.

Mrs Tabua was among the first class of students who sat for the Fiji Junior Certificate Examination in 1974.

She said the reunion was a flashback to their school days.

“It’s time to sit, meet, and talk about the past and look at what we can do to give back to the school,” she said.

NSS was established in 1974 by Columban priests from the Missionary Society of St Columban, before being taken over by Marist priests from the Society of Mary, who led the school to become a full secondary institution up to Form Six.

The reunion served as an introduction to the grand celebration of the NSS’s Golden Jubilee, scheduled for next October.

Leone Colaivalu, a member of the old scholar executive committee, said: “The reunion was for us to meet, know each other, and talk about the preparation for the 50th anniversary next year. We need to establish the bond first.”

NESA, which was founded in 2018, has seen various year groups participating in events and functions leading to the idea of launching the 50th-anniversary celebration.

Mr Colaivalu said most of their pioneers were renowned individuals in their respective fields.
