He stood out not only for his province but for the theological community in Fiji and the Pacific.
His doctoral research, titled ‘A tu ga na i nima ka luvu na waqa – Eco Relational Reconstruction of Soteriology in Relation to Deep Sea Mining in Oceania’, explores how Pacific people can understand salvation (soteriology) through their relationship with the ocean and the land, the vanua.
“We are trying to define a God, who is already there in the vanua,” he said.
“In theological terms, it means the immanent presence of God is not far away, but within the vanua itself. When we see God as being part of our land, ocean, and culture, we can better uphold and protect them.”
He developed a Fijian understanding of Salvation, which he describes as “sautu,” a concept of holistic well-being rooted in communal harmony with the environment and the spiritual world.
He said earning his PhD before turning 50 was a personal goal and a spiritual journey.
“Nothing is impossible. Excitement can start the journey, but commitment carries you through. I give all the glory to God, who has been my pillar of strength.”
His achievement has opened a new path for others in Macuata who dream of reaching higher in education.
“Being the first from my province in this field means a lot. It sets an example for those who will follow. Now, they will have someone who can guide them and show them that it is possible.
“Honour and glory be to God. He is the pillar that guided me through this journey,” he said.
