The two hours walk to school daily from his home at Vutia Village to Naililili, Rewa paid-off on Friday for 15 year old, Maika Nariro.

With paternal links to Jioma Village in Kadavu and maternal links to Naracivo, Rewa, the young man was awarded the Best Male Cadet.

“The award has inspired me to keep working towards my goal of being a soldier,” Maika said.

“One of the challenges I faced was waking up early, walking to school for two hours to in school before 8am. That taught me to be grateful and humble for every achievement.”

Maika is the second youngest of six children in his family. He wants to join the British Army - a dream he has had since young.

“It’s been a new experience for me and I feel the military is an important institution that displays discipline and leadership. I want to be part of it one day.”

His mother, Alumeci Lautiki could not hold back her excitement. She cheered when her son’s name was announced for the award.
