The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) will continue to play a supportive role to the Fiji Police Force in the national fight against drugs, says Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua.

Mr Tikoduadua made it clear today that the military and police operate under separate legal powers and that maintaining the independence of each force was crucial.

The RFMF is in a very, very strong supportive role in the areas where the Fiji Police Force needs them in the maintenance of the rule of law, because our powers, the powers of the two forces are separate.

"It's very important to maintain their independence."

Mr Tikoduadua said the military could be called in for specific tasks at the police's request, particularly to protect officers carrying out their duties, but that the police remained in command.

"There are circumstances where the military will be invited to do certain works that the police would like them to do, particularly in protecting the police to carry out their duty," he said.

Joint ops centre ‘working well’

He added that a joint operation centre between the two forces had been running well and would continue.

Mr Tikoduadua said the joint effort was producing results.

"Hopefully, we'll be able to see the continuation of this for the protection of our country and our people," he said.

The comments follow months of evolving cooperation between the RFMF and police, where both institutions earlier this year agreed to step up joint action against the illicit drug trade.

RFMF Commander Jone Kalouniwai had confirmed the military would not carry firearms in its support role.
