The Republic of Fiji Military Forces has acknowledged that its initial description of Jone Vakarisi’s death as a “medical emergency” does not fully reflect post-mortem findings.

In a statement yesterday, the RFMF said it was correcting aspects of its earlier communication following receipt of the post-mortem report.

The military said the updated medical findings had prompted a reassessment of its initial account, but declined to provide further details as investigations are ongoing.

The matter is currently under investigation by the Fiji Police Force.

The RFMF said it would fully cooperate with authorities to ensure all facts are established in a thorough, independent and transparent manner.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, stating that any wrongdoing identified would be addressed in accordance with the law.

The RFMF extended condolences to Mr Vakarisi’s family and said further updates would be provided after the investigation is completed.
