The Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, has called for accountability and transparency over the contents and implementation of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) report.

In an interview yesterday, Major General Kalouniwai confirmed he had written to the Minister for Defence, Pio Tikoduadua, expressing the military's concerns regarding the findings and the need for the public to know the truth.

"There is public interest in the report. The public have the right to it," Major General Kalouniwai said.

"It's all about being transparent and accountable- that's the gist of of the message I put across.”

He said the RFMF’s concerns should not be seen as a cause for public alarm.

Under Section 131 of the 2013 Constitution, the RFMF is mandated to ensure the security, defence, and well-being of Fiji and all Fijians.

The Commander confirmed receiving the unedited version of the COI report from Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, following a meeting at the PM’s office yesterday.

Mr Tikoduadua also moved to reassure the public, saying there was no interference from the military.

“RFMF is not intervening. The commander wrote to me — I am his line minister. He is not intervening in anything,” the minister said.

He confirmed that Major General Kalouniwai had met the PM yesterday at the latter’s invitation.

Mr Rabuka met his three Deputy Prime Ministers in his office yesterday before separate meetings with Major General Kalouniwai and Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu.

Mr Tudravu also confirmed receiving the unedited COI report from the PM.

Later in the day, Mr Rabuka visited President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu to brief him on the developments surrounding the COI report.
