Road Accident Claims Life of A Farmer

A fatal vehicle accident involving a Toyota Hilux twin cab and another vehicle, resulted in the death of farmer, Ratusau Kalabete, last Saturday evening.

The accident occurred along the Wainikoro Road outside Labasa Town.

Mr Kalabete’s cousin, Corby Cakaunivere, said the news of his cousin’s death was a massive shock to him and his family.

“My cousin was travelling to his farm in Dogotuki, from Labasa Town when their van collided with the other vehicle and veered off the road,” he said.

Mr Cakaunivere described his relative as a kind-hearted, loving, and funny person who enjoyed socialising with family and friends.

He mentioned that his cousin and his family were originally from Drekeniwai Village, Natewa Bay in Savusavu. However, they were now residing in Labasa.

Mr Kalabete’s brother, Nemani Raqauqau said the death of his older brother had left behind a large void in their family’s life and he would not be able to comment further.

Moreover, efforts to contact other family members of the deceased were unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, Police confirmed that the victim was one of the three passengers travelling along the Wainikoro Road outside Labasa Town.

Police also stated that the occupants of both vehicles were rushed to the Labasa Hospital, however Mr Kalabete was pronounced dead.

Mr Kalabete is survived by his mother and five siblings.
