The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has reported a drop in road fatalities as of June 6 this year.

This was revealed by Minister for Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau.

The authority recorded a 45 per cent decrease from last year, which noted 42 fatalities, compared to 23 to date.

Mr Tuisawau said the difference in the statistics reflected the efficacy of robust enforcement operations and comprehensive road safety education and awareness campaigns.

“The coordinated efforts of the LTA, Fiji Police Force and stakeholders have played a crucial role in the reduction, alongside the strategic use of the showcase hearings to address frequent and habitual offenders on our roads,” he said.

From August 1, 2023 to June 1, 2024, the LTA has counselled 58 drivers, issued 1206 warning letters and 45 final warning letters.

As well as that, 13 driver’s license was suspended while 112 have been cancelled.

“In the same period of last year, LTA had counselled 284 drivers, issued 2,217 warning letters and cancelled and suspended 42 driver’s licence,” he said.

“Speeding continues to be a major concern, followed by drink driving, pedestrians at fault, dangerous driving, passenger at fault incidents and hit-and-run cases.

Mr Tuisawau said nationwide road safety education campaigns in collaboration with corporate partners have contributed to the increased awareness about the dangers of reckless driving, benefits of driving practices and the responsibilities of drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

From January to April, 2024, Mr Tuisawau said a total of 893 awareness activities were carried out with an impact of 131, 055 and these initiatives will continue this year.

“As part of our commitment to road safety, we are also looking at introducing a mandatory Defensive Driving Course for holders of Class 2 full driver licences. This requirement aims to ensure that experienced drivers continue to adhere to safe driving standards,” Mr Tuisawau said.

“The introduction of demerit points system and tougher penalties is also expected to deter traffic violations and curb irresponsible driving behaviours.”
