Tampering with and stealing road signs is a serious national security concern, says Minister for Defence Pio Tikoduadua.

His comments come as the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) deals with a growing problem of damaged and missing road signage across the country, driven by vandalism, theft, and unsafe driving.

Mr Tikoduadua said such actions pose significant risks to public safety.

“This is sheer irresponsibility,” he said.

“There is no consideration for the safety of our people. It is a serious offence.

“When someone interferes with a road sign, they are putting lives at risk. It is no different from driving at 100 kilometres an hour in a 20-kilometre zone where children are present.”

He urged the public to act responsibly and look out for one another, especially as road fatalities remain high.

“To continue to tamper with these signs is, in a way, a matter of national security,” he said.

“Police cannot be everywhere at all times. The onus is on the public to help keep our roads safe.”

The FRA said vandalism — including graffiti, knocked-down signs, and theft — reduces the visibility of critical road information and increases the risk of accidents, particularly near intersections, schools, and high-traffic areas.

“FRA receives daily reports of missing signs, damage caused by careless driving, and graffiti on roadside signage, highlighting the ongoing challenge of maintaining the network,” it said in a statement.

“Missing or damaged signs create confusion for road users and can lead to serious safety hazards, while reckless driving continues to impact vital road infrastructure.”

The authority is urging the public to respect road assets, drive responsibly, and report damaged or missing signs.
