Hitting rock bottom became a life-changing opportunity for career civil servant Atelaite Rokosuka.

After graduating from the University of the South Pacific with a Master of Commerce in Management and Public Administration yesterday, Mrs Rokosuka described her journey as “God is the perfect planner.”

Many women from diverse backgrounds took centre stage at the graduation, but for Mrs Rokosuka, despite numerous setbacks, clung to the thin thread of faith was it was the only safe place she had.

Challenges

Juggling family affairs while completing her studies, in 2018, was no easy task.

She said starting her master’s studies in 2018 was a brave choice.

The heavy workload of serving the Government made it even more challenging, but everything became possible through the support of her family.

“Juggling studies and sustaining my family on a daily basis wasn’t easy at all,” Mrs Rokosuka said.

“Finding time to study was a battle in itself, but with the right mindset and support from those around me, that was a driving force for me.”

Despite facing her darkest moments, including a temporary layoff from her role as Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Fisheries and Forestry, Mrs Rokosuka remained steadfast in her faith and unwavering in her pursuit of further education.

She saw the situation as a turning point to stretch her abilities and complete her Master’s degree.

She admitted there were times she wanted to give up, but with her faith in Jesus Christ, she overcame all setbacks and persisted in her quest to become the best version of herself.

‘Giving up wasn’t an option’

“Giving up wasn’t an option for me because I knew I still had a lot to accomplish in future, not only to educate myself but to share my knowledge with others,” she said.

“I believe that even when we face many downfalls, how we get back up really determines how far we will go in life.”

Through her triumphs, Mrs Rokosuka not only built a distinguished career as a civil servant over 27 years but also found fulfillment in raising six children with her husband’s support and cherishing time with her grandchildren.

She believes that encouraging other women to pursue their educational and professional aspirations can create a ripple effect, fostering a supportive community and breaking down barriers.
