Rosy Akbar: School Curriculum To Include Cancer Studies

Former Minister for Health and Medical Services Rosy Akbar intends to include cancer studies in the Fijian school curriculum Family Life Education (FLE).

The now Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts said: “Currently we are so prescriptive in our curriculum services in Fiji because we are preparing children for exams.”

She was speaking at the MIOT Continuing Medical Education Programme in ‘Win Against Cancer’ hosted in Nadi yesterday.

“We do have Family Life currently within our school systems and I intend to use that to ensure that we include awareness on any form of cancer and on all forms of diseases.

“And these little children can actually be our mouth pieces. They’re the ones who can take the information back home.”

Over the last decade, the youngest prostate cancer victim was in his 20s.

This was revealed by the Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts Rosy Akbar yesterday.

She said: “In 2017, 281 females and one male were diagnosed with breast cancer, yes breast cancer also affects men.

“This compares to 329 females and nine males in 2016.

She said the burden of cancer can be controlled if we work together.
