It is important to develop the ability to be obedient and learn from others.

Christopher Tawakeniqila made the comment yesterday after receiving the Baton of Honour award during the Ratu Sukuna Memorial School cadet passing-out parade at Albert Park in Suva.

The drizzling rain and wet underfoot conditions failed to dampen Tawakeniqila’s spirit as he boldly led 842 students of the Nabua-based school.

“You only get to live this life once and this achievement makes me proud and humbled at the same time,” he said.

“Not only did I have the honour of leading the school parade, but most importantly I got to set a bar for my siblings.”

Tawakeniqila, 18, has strived to set good examples for his three younger siblings.

“I want them to have the same visions as I do, whether they’re striving for better education or out in the workforce,” he said.

Tawakeniqila dedicated his achievement to a patriarchal generation that always helped him with responsibilities as a man of the house.

“This achievement is dedicated to my grandfather who was a former army officer. The discipline and respect I was taught has molded me to become who I am today,” he said.

“The other man is my father. On days when all fails he will always find a way to help his family survive.”

The Chief of Staff of Land Force Command, Viliame Draunibaka, spoke on three core values students must adopt to succeed in life.

“Leadership, discipline and teamwork are important values that students need to grasp and work on in order to do better in life,” he said.

“Without such values, it will be impossible for these students to succeed.”

Tawakeniqila said these core values were filtered quite well to students and he hoped they would maintain these values throughout their lives.
