Sand Extraction Illegal: Lands Ministry

Anyone found extracting sand from foreshores around the country will be prosecuted under the State Lands Act, says Director of Lands Irena Nayacalevu.
Ms Nayacalevu has warned people not to steal sand from any public beaches around the country.
She said public notices have been placed at public beaches and foreshores around the country to remind people to follow the law.

She said it was noticed by Ministry officials and concerns were raised by members of the public that a large number of individuals were illegally extracting sand from public beaches in Navua and Nasese causing sinkholes and environmental impact.
“If people are unaware of the laws regarding extraction they can call us but to put it simply all public beaches belong to the State and administered by the Director of Lands.
“Removal of sand from any public beach is not permitted,” said Ms Nayacalevu.
She said some individuals were caught by Ministry of Lands officials in Navua over the weekend stealing sand from Naitonitoni beach. They were warned and were asked to return the sand and fill the sinkholes.
“People can buy sand for domestic use from licensed suppliers and sand extraction for community use will only be permitted to communities within the Qoliqoli.”
Upon approval from the traditional owners of the land, she said sand extraction will then take place under strict supervision by the ministry.
She added that more awareness will be done in this regard through the media to inform the public of the Act.
