The Saturday of Service for Soroptimist Clubs was celebrated in Lautoka last week.

This event is celebrated worldwide on the first Saturday of March every year where the members carry out hands-on service within the community

The members of the Soroptimist International (SI) Lautoka held their hands-on service by planting vegetables and root crops for the Jasper William High School Hostel students at the hostel gardens last Saturday.

SI Lautoka treasurer Zareena Bi said it was a unique opportunity to raise awareness about Soroptimist International as an international organisation of women.

“This is a continuation of our service from last year when we planted cassava for the students,” she said.

Ms Bi said they were also grateful to Mr Atish, a vegetable farmer in Buabua for providing them with the seedlings for planting.

Interestingly, the head girl of Tilak High School, Palvi Dewan, who recently joined the club, was also part of the team.

Meanwhile, clubs are required to select a hands-on service project that focuses on women and girls and can be carried out on the Saturday prior to March 8.

Projects should reflect the goals and objectives of the SI Strategic Plan.

Some examples of successful projects include painting and doing other repairs in a domestic violence shelter, setting up a one-day health care clinic for low income women; or holding an educational workshop on non-traditional careers for girls.
