The Ministry of Youth and Sports is aiming to establish a National Anti-Doping Organisation (NADO) in the country.

As the minister responsible, Jese Saukuru reflects on their growth and achievements after one year in office.

Mr Saukuru said the ministry was working closely with Drug Free Sports Fiji to facilitate the establishment of NADO.

“We are currently finalising the recruitment of a coordinator to first coordinate and assist in the establishment of NADO, and secondly to develop, implement, and update anti-doping policies and procedures according to international standards and regulations,” Mr Saukuru said.

“This aspect is to develop and deliver educational programmes to athletes, coaches, and support staff regarding the consequences of doping, the importance of clean sports, and the anti-doping rules.”

 Achievements

With that, one of the great achievements they made last year was the passing of the National Youth Policy and the re-establishment of the Youth Council, which hadn’t been done for quite some time.

“We also managed to launch the peace declaration at Draunikula in the province of Serua, which was historical.”

Mr Saukuru said in terms of sports development, the ministry hopes to make Fiji a hub of sports in the Pacific.

He said during the one year of leadership, it was quite challenging trying to get youths out of their comfort zone.

“I have seen the main challenges within communities because the area is bound by what has been set aside in the budget, but rest assured, we will work to improve the standards of living,” he said.
