Savusavu Market to become drug-free zone
Police will monitor criminal activities in the complex.

The new two-storey Savusavu Municipal Market that is expected to open next month.
A smoke and drug-free zone is being planned to be implemented at the new Savusavu Market, says the Minister for Policing, Ioane Naivalurua.
Mr Naivalurua, while officiating in the opening, said vendors and the executives of Savusavu Town Council had to work in unison to mitigate smoking and illicit drug peddling issues.
“I have expressed on these two things (smoke and drug free concept) to officials of the municipal council to be implemented soon,” he said.

“We need to declare Savusavu Market a smoke and drug-free complex by erecting preventative signage around the market”.
Mr Naivalurua said illicit drug peddling could be addressed by making it a daily priority to ensure no person engaged in this illegal act and reporting perpetrators to police.
He said ownership and taking responsibility to look after the market facilities now fell on vendors.
“Government has constructed, now vendors have to look after,” he said.

He was asked on the state of the Labasa Market, which had previously come under the spotlight against illicit drug peddling where people were arrested by police.
“It is not really about what police does only. It’s the responsibility that must be taken by the public and vendors at large”.
He called on vendors to ensure the cleanliness of the new Savusavu Market.
