School Manager, 83, Is An Amazing Fijian

At 83, Hamid Hussain of Nasarawaqa in Bua is an exemplary amazing Fijian.
The school manager of Ahmadiyya Muslim College Voloca, Macuata is making a difference in people’s lives by his humanitarian efforts.
The school is sheltering 227 people from Batiri Village and Naua Village since January 28.

He has been providing food, whenever he can, for the evacuees with the help of his daughters.
“Their houses were under water and they had to rush to school with whatever they had,” Mr Hussain said of the evacuees.
“The youngest is a three-month-old boy and all of them couldn’t bring food that could last for more than a week.”
The father of six daughters said at first he provided them with lunch from his own expenses.
“Then I asked one of my daughters, who is a teacher in Suva, to sponsor breakfast and she did,” he said.
“Another daughter of mine in New Zealand, who is a nurse, sponsored lunch and so we cooked chicken palau and chutney.”
The retired bus driver has been the school manager since 2011.
He travels to school by bus daily and is unable to drive because of his age.
“Our school motto is love for all and hatred for none and this is what I practised,” he said.
“I also took out a generator in payment for the school costing $1800 when the quarters staff told me they had no power and couldn’t pump water from the borehole.
“Now staff and evacuees have access to basic necessity.”
He is thankful to those who helped him prepare the meals.
Batiri Village headman Sakove Waidranu said he was thankful to the school manager.
“We are all iTaukei in the school and we are still in desperate need for food,”Mr Waidranu said.
“Our houses were flooded by the deepest river in Fiji, Dreketi River during Tropical Cyclone Ana.
“Everything including livestock, houses, belongings, food and children’s school stuff all washed away.”
There are 43 families in the school.
