Vunimono High School (VHS) is one of the 10 schools to pilot a system implemented by the Fijian Elections Office for the appointment of head prefects.

In the case of VHS, head boy Prashneel Prakash and head girl, Nanise Rabonu, had the opportunity to campaign to fellow students on why they should be chosen to their new roles.

It was this year, that the FEO, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, implemented a system allowing students to vote for their leaders, and VHS is one of the 10 schools piloting this project.

The heads and deputies campaigned to students from Year 11 to Year 13, explaining why they should be selected.

A designated day was chosen for the election.

Prashneel expressed gratitude for the new process.

“I had the opportunity to speak with students and spoke on why they should choose me as their head boy.

There were specific criteria we must meet,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of time management in balancing schoolwork and his new responsibilities.

At the same time he will draw up plans for regular meetings to address issues that crop up.

Head girl, Nanise thanked teachers and students for having faith in her capability.

She highlighted the importance of kindness and understanding towards students, acknowledging the diverse backgrounds and struggles they face daily.

Nanise is from Matamaivere Village, Namara in Tailevu, with maternal links to Naduri Village in Macuata Province.

There are 1060 students attending VHS.

This year there are 60 year captains, 30 senior prefects, four deputies and the head boy and head girl.
