A new surface water supply with treatment system has been set up for Naduri District School, Naduri Village and neighbouring settlements in Macuata.

This was implemented by Rotary Pacific Water for Life Foundation through its donor Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade New Zealand, Rotary New Zealand World Community Services, Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation and Vaiwai.

The project commissioned by New Zealand High Commission Fiji first secretary Anita Edgecombe on Tuesday will directly benefit more than 161 students, ten teachers and 500 villagers.

The school and the village were previously faced with non-fully functional water systems from an untreated source without a proper storage system to meet their daily demand and poor sanitation that are often subjected to common water borne diseases.

Rotary Pacific Water for Life Foundation chief executive officer Neil Maharaj said the organisation provided this intervention in line with sustainable development goal number six and the Fijian Government’s National Development Plan.

Rotary Pacific Water for Life Foundation (Rotary Pacific Water) is a registered non-governmental organisation which strives to provide rural communities with safer drinking water and adequate sanitation since 2007.

Working closely with Ministry of Health, Department of Water Sewerage, Water Authority of Fiji, Mineral Resources Department, provincial office and provincial administrator’s office, their projects are accomplished through public health awareness, infrastructure solutions and skills training to ensure water supply needs for beneficiaries are sustained.

“It is a day of celebration for the people of Naduri community at the commissioning of their new water, sanitation and hygiene facility which is one of the five sites supported by the New Zealand government to expand access to safe water and improved sanitation in Macuata,” Ms Edgecombe said.

“This partnership helps bring lasting health and well-being for families and strengthens our shared commitment to a better and more resilient future.”

Vodafone Fiji Limited retail sales consultant Anaseini Turaganivalu said this was not just about infrastructure, but about dignity, health and the future of our children.

“This water system is more than just pipes and tanks. It’s about children going to school without worry, protection from waterborne diseases, 24/7 access to clean water, empowering communities with resilience, health and hope,” Ms Turaganivalu said.

This project has shown the power of accessible water systems and the value of long-lasting relationships built on collaboration.
