The Ministry of Education has referred cases of misappropriation of funds in schools to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
These cases involve schools that were provided funds for projects but failed to produce receipts, and the projects were either not completed or never started.
This information was revealed by the Principal Education Officer at the Ministry of Education’s Assets and Infrastructure Services Ilisoni Waqa.

“We have referred cases for audit and FICAC is conducting interviews and requesting documents. We have been assisting them by providing the evidence they need to support their investigations and resolve these pending issues,” Mr Waqa said.
When asked about the number of schools referred to FICAC, he responded, “I don’t have the numbers with me, but I will get back to you.”
He also did not divulge further on the details of the schools.
At Nasoki Village, a request was made for assistance with the completion of a double-storey classroom.
Mr Waqa confirmed that assistance was provided, but the school failed to produce receipts for documentation.
He emphasised the importance of using government funds wisely and maintaining proper documentation.
“When funds are given to schools, we expect them to be used for their intended purpose. Schools with good records are more likely to receive funding for future projects,” Mr Waqa said.
He encouraged schools to keep thorough records of receipts for any funds utilised for projects.
