Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro yesterday, hinted at plans to implement spot checks in schools as part of efforts to combat drug issues among students.
Mr Radrodro acknowledged the challenges of drug peddling in schools and outlined measures being taken to address these concerns.
“We are looking at spot checks in schools, given that consent of parents needed to be given to schools, teachers, to allow for this to take place,” Mr Radrodro said.

Mr Radrodro also revealed that school chaplains would be included in the education system “to allow for moral values and attention to the students,” along with providing counselling services across the country’s divisions.
“We have challenges in terms of the availability of school counsellors in the respective schools, but this is something that we are working towards to ensure that students are provided the necessary counselling services,” he said.
Mr Radrodro called for greater stakeholder involvement in addressing social issues affecting students.
“We are encouraging not only students, but stakeholders as well, to ensure that they look after their children.
“To ensure that they don’t get involved in the social issues like drugs, drug peddling in schools,” he stated.
