Fiji’s laws governing the private security industry are under review for the first time since the Security Industry Act was established in 2010.

The Fiji Law Reform Commission (FLRC), in partnership with the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, has begun the review to determine whether the legislation remains effective and fit for purpose. The review will also identify reforms to address the evolving needs of the private security industry.

Ana Rokomokoti was appointed commissioner for the review on June 8 and will lead stakeholder consultations and develop recommendations for law reform.

A final report, together with a draft Bill and draft Cabinet paper, is expected to be submitted to the Acting Attorney-General by September 30.

The first phase of the review will include targeted stakeholder consultations on July 9 and 10 involving government agencies, industry representatives, private security providers and other key stakeholders.

The consultations will:

- identify issues affecting the operation of the Security Industry Act 2010;

- gather stakeholder views on areas requiring reform; and

- inform the development of a discussion paper for the next stage of the review.

Following the consultations, the FLRC will publish a discussion paper outlining key issues and possible reform options. Members of the public and stakeholders will then be invited to make written and oral submissions. Details of the consultation schedule and submission process will be announced on the FLRC website and social media platforms.

The commission is encouraging stakeholders and members of the public with an interest in Fiji’s private security industry to participate in the review.
