The Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete says other than personal remedies individuals are urged to consider using conventional medicine too for this cold season.

His comments come after more people have contracted flu because of the cold season.

Dr Waqainabete said he was keen on Fijians presenting themselves at either the public or private health facilities if they had the flu.

“What I hope is that Fijians that have the flu can present themselves to the health facilities for those who come to the public health facilities or for those who choose the private health facilities,” he said.

“If you have your own remedies that’s okay but what I am suggesting is that it is important to utilise the health facilities.

“Some people use traditional medicine but whatever we use, please also consider conventional medicine.”

He said the recent flu that people had been down with was not only a national issue but a global one.

“If you look at people right around the world some of the big nations like Australia and America, they have been hit with the flu, it is a global thing,” he said

“What is important in my opinion is that we continue to have a lot of awareness and that people need to keep out of the rain, keep themselves warm and we are going now into the cold season so it is a combination of rain and the cold so these are the reasons why people get the flu.”
