Semi Bavoro, 12, leaves home at 6am daily to be among the first group of students to be at Waiqele Primary School in Labasa early.

The Kulukulu Settlement lad travels in a Rural Service Licence (RSL) carrier and would be at school at 6.45am.

He was proud to be inducted as the head boy during the school’s prefect badging ceremony last Friday.

The youngest of three siblings never thought a sugarcane labourer’s son would be given this leadership role.

“I thank the Lord for blessing me more than I asked for and my parents for working hard to send me to school every day,” Semi said.

Now being the head boy, he would not want to miss classes to help teachers in the school.

Head girl Gurneet Kaur of Kawakawa Settlement, meanwhile, is proud to continue the family legacy.

Her two elder siblings were head boy and head girl of this school.
