Semi Seruvakula, 29, once believed his future was lost when peer pressure derailed his mechanical engineering studies 11 years ago.

However, life had a different plan.

The determined young man from Navutu Village, Navuakece, Naitasiri, faced challenges head-on and emerged stronger.

On Thursday, he celebrated a significant milestone, receiving his Certificate in Fabrication and Welding (Level 3) during the Fiji National University (FNU) graduation ceremony at the Vodafone Arena.

Reflecting on his journey, Mr Seruvakula said: "Peer pressure led me back to the village, where I told my father I should stay home and farm with him.

"Not long after, a friend working as a security officer asked if I wanted a job. From being a security guard, I was introduced to this course.

"From there, I took one step at a journey of faith and time."

With unwavering determination, he financed his studies through earnings as a security officer.

His father, Venieli Cakausese, 62, the village headman of Navuakece, was overcome with pride.

"My son may have learnt it the hard way, but through that, he is becoming the strong, independent man we want him to be," Mr Cakausese said.

Offering advice to young people, he added: "He was a TELS student before, but now he studies during the day and works as a security officer by night.

"Pursue God well and pursue education. There are so many opportunities available. The onus is on you kids to make it happen."

After a year and a half of studies at FNU's Samabula campus, Mr Seruvakula is shaping a promising future.

Currently employed at Fast Engineering, he is passionate about his work and relies on his faith to guide the way forward.

"I'm leaning on God to direct my next steps," he said.
