Pauliasi Vatanitawake, 95, of Namara, Kadavu, has a simple but powerful message for Fiji’s youth: serve God wholeheartedly, live with discipline, and drink less kava.
The retired Methodist Church pastor, who served over 60 years across various circuits in Fiji, is the country’s oldest serving church leader.
He has attended every Methodist Church annual conference since 1952 and joins thousands of faithful once again this week.

“I am grateful to be part of another annual conference. It has been part of my life for more than 70 years,” he said.
Mr Vatanitawake lives in Tovata, Kalabu, on land granted to him in recognition of his service. He believes his long life is no accident.
“The reason I live long is because I serve the greatest God. It is the will of the Almighty,” he said.
He expressed concern about today’s youth, many of whom are being drawn to drugs and excessive kava consumption.
“Some died young because of drinking too much kava. Drink less, train your body, and be physically fit,” he said.
“Young people must attend church service with the right intentions. Parents must prioritise their children because everything starts at home, and the reflection will be seen in the community.”
Faith and family have been his foundation. His eldest son, Reverend Sailasa Vatanitawake, also served as a pastor, and his grandson, Manasa, has joined the calling.
“I believe I am reaping the fruit of my work because my son and grandson chose to follow in my footsteps,” he said.
He reminded church leaders and youth of their higher duty:
“Love your God with all your heart and love your neighbours. If we do this, our communities will be stronger,” he said.
