Seven people, including a 20-day-old baby, are homeless after a mid day inferno completely destroyed their home in Nawaicoba, Nadi, on Saturday.

The incident which happened about 11.30am, left the family with nothing except the clothes they were wearing.

Mother-of-five, Jyoti Devi, 34, was in tears when a team from the Fiji Sun visited what used to be their residence.

Ms Devi recounted that she had left the home unattended to visit her mother-in-law’s house.

She said, “I cleaned the house and went to my mother-in-law’s place.

From there I saw our house was on fire. Luckily, my 20-day-old baby son was not inside the home, otherwise he would have been dead,”

She said her eldest son had gone to the shop while the other siblings were playing with children next door.

“My husband is a taxi driver. He was not at home when the incident happened. We have nothing left to feed our children.” Ms Devi said.

Police said together with the National Fire Authority an investigation was underway to determine the cause of fire.
